i can smell video games

Being an only child and living near no children and across from a silo surprisingly has its benefits. As a kid, I was able to play a lot of great video games (by myself), and I was lucky enough to actually choose good video games. I don’t actually know how I did it, but at like ten years old I knew I wanted Final Fantasy VII, and I sucked at the game, really badly and didn’t end up beating it until about five years later.

During this time of video game bliss, while not worrying about a job or my future, I really was more into the games than I’ve ever been. Nowadays if I’m playing a game by myself, I’ll watch the clock or occasionally worry about whether or not I’m wasting my time. When I was kid, I never worried about wasting my time, and why should I? I was a kid.

This next part blows my mind.

Still.

The most important and recurring memories that I have of those times are scent memories.

That’s right.

Every now and then while living my present life, I’ll stumble upon a smell that instantly makes me thing of Final Fantasy IX or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I even have a scent memory for Pokémon. This confuses me to no end, but obviously these experiences with these games are so strong and so embedded in my pysche that my brain can’t help but recall distinct smells that I smelled during my playtime with those games.

This makes me look silly.

Its true though, and sure enough, every know and then my mind will instantly pop with a memory of a video game for no apparant reason, even when I’m doing the most of mundane things like making my bed or washing dishes. Obviously I wasn’t washing dishes when I was playing Pokémon, but why does it occasionally sneak on stage in mind to bring attention to it’s creepy synapses attaching self.

Its such a bizarre phenomenon for me and I’m surprised and delighted every time it happens.

Perhaps this is a normal thing, and I am just blown away by the fact that I remember the scent of periods in my life with a certain game.

Weird humans, or maybe just weird me.
