This recently released trailer for Square-Enix iPhone game Chaos Ring, looks impressive and absolutely nostalgic since it uses the pre-rendered CG backgrounds and Playstation One era character models.
However, other than that, it really does just look like an old RPG that was unreleased on the PS1, and a fairly bland one at that. I think the geeking out a lot of people are doing over this has to do with three reasons.
One.
They want to re-visit their youth, because they think games today suck, but once they go back in time and try to play through aged crap like Final Fantasy VII, they realize that gaming today ain’t so bad.
Two.
They’re just so god damn obsessed when an iPhone game has amazing graphics and blows them away with typical big console features, regardless of how bland the games are.
Three.
Nerdgasming over anything Square-Enix releases is what a large amount of gamers do, and the the truth is that the only game that Square-Enix has ever been good at is making main cannon Final Fantasy games, and even then, that’s a little iffy.
Hey though, right? It could be good? I do bet you that it’s going to be $15 - $20 and that isn’t too bad considering how long and dense the game is going to be.
However, making a game lengthy, and filling it with mediocre gameplay doesn’t make a good game.
