The magical video game influenced world of Scott Pilgrim
Brian Lee O’ Malley’s six part epic graphic novel Scott Pilgrim has only snowballed since the first volume’s original publication in 2004. It has snowballed so much so that it is being made into a rather incredible looking movie staring Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim and Edgar Wright of Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead fame is directing.
O’ Malley doesn’t seem to play many video games these days because he’s probably busy and because he’s mentioned on his blog a few times that he just doesn’t have time for them anymore, but that’s just an assumption, he could be playing something right now.
Regardless, for certain he was an avid gamer and as a result Scott Pilgrim has the best nostalgic video game references around and each novel at least has one.

The reason I bring this up is because of the excellent implementation of video game themed elements in the new Scott Pilrgim movie, as especially seen in the new trailer.

You’ll find the above scene around the fourty second mark in the trailer and not only is it epically awesome and reminiscent of a fighting game when it’s in motion, but a particular sound effect that they used for the VS. appearing that absolutely floors me with legitimacy.
I haven’t seen this sort of fun over the top animation implemented in a movie since Speed Racer.

Even cooler, in this minute ‘o three scene where Scott punches the life out of one of Ramona’s ex-boyfriends and a perfect fighting game announcer shouts his echoed K.O.! voice. It’s totally awesome.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the graphic novels, you should before the movie drops on August 13th. I don’t expect the film to live up the novels, but then again, I never did, and am perfectly fine with that. I will tell you that I am stoked for the film and judging by the trailer it looks wonderful.
I don’t think it could be done any better.
