Good Game Get! Dokapon Kingdom

My girlfriend and I started playing Dokapon Kingdom on the Wii for the first time last night. We knew very little about the game and in fact hadn’t even watched videos of the title but a good friend recommended it to us so we knew we wouldn’t be making a bad purchase.

The game is essentially set-up like Mario Party, except you create your own character, name that character, and you don’t play mini games at the end of each round. Another major difference is the fact that the game is one giant game board instead of game board worlds like in Mario Party. Dokapon Kingdom’s game board is absolutely gigantic and actually mirrors Earth in terms of topography.

The game is set up like a normal board game video game; but the game gets really interesting when you realize that it actually has deep RPG elements such as collecting loot, weapons, amour, experience points, and skills. You level up and you can even change your job class, and hair styles depending on your progress throughout the game. The game’s objective is to collect the most money and to do so by any means possible, and it really means that. You can steal from any player if you win a battle with them and you can also shame them and even more interestingly, you can change their name to Poo Poo Face or Sarah Palin if you desire.

You can even capture towns in the game, and invest and collect taxes from the towns. Most of the stuff I’m briefly discussing is is just surface level as this pseudo board game/rpg is extremely deep.

The game falls short when it comes to the CPU opponent’s handicap. You can put them on the least difficult standing and for some weird algorithmic reason, the CPU will always have much better luck than you and typically will always come out on top and even run away with the game to the point where you can’t possibly catch up with them.

The game shines however, if you can get mostly human players in on the action. It’s a truly unique title and while the graphics, and sound are not at all memorable, the gameplay and fun had by you and your friends will be.
